See You Some Unknown Hinson May 15, 2007
Last night Tim, Joe, Gabe, Ashley and I headed down to the Bank & Blues to check out the musical stylings of one Unknown Hinson. Tim had spotted a bizarre looking ad in the local newspaper. I don’t remember the text exactly, but it showed this strange looking fellow and included descriptive terms like “vampiric” and “psychobilly.” I was tempted to go based on this alone, but when I checked out unknownhinson.com and heard a song I went from On the Fence to Just Try’n Hold Me Back.
You see, Unknown Hinson’s voice is very familiar to anyone who watches [adult swim] on Cartoon Network. He provides the voice of Early Cuyler on “Squidbillies.” And when he sings, it’s like Early is singing about his life and times.
While I would have been happy to simply see and hear this feller do his thing, when we got there we had another fun discovery. Unknown Hinson is a hell of a performer and an absolute monster on the guitar. The lyrics are funny, the song is catchy, and then all of a sudden he’ll blast into a 3-minute guitar solo that leaves you drooling.
That, and he mixes a ton of different sounds. Some songs were like surf rock, others were pure rockabilly, a few were country ballads and I swear “The King of Country Western Troubadours” sounded like Van Halen to me at the beginning.
Some sample lyrics: “You gave the dog my supper you had sex with my brother you done some ugly things for such a pretty girl.”
Go see him, you won’t regret it. G’won, git!
