GRM, LeMons, and the Hepatitis Z Jan 15, 2008

About a month ago, my friend Tom Cotter shot me an e-mail asking me if I might like to be part of a 24 Hours of Lemons team with him. Tom wrote the “Cobra in the Barn” book series as well as others and is a regular contributor to Road & Track. He also lined up two more teammates: Amelia Island Concours founder Bill Warner and Elliot Forbes Robinson, famous racer and longtime Road & Track photographer.

Sounded like a lot of fun and some good PR. Plus, I knew we were going to become a sponsor of the event; we are also now the official magazine of the 24 Hours of LeMons, and I always like to get personally involved when we sponsor something.

So when the subject of what car to run came up, I suggested Joe Gearin’s Hepatitis Z. Our ad salesman purchased this crappy 1987 Z 28 Camaro to run in the local Crash-A-Rama. Apparently the event lived up to its name — when we received the $400 Camaro, it had obviously endured a harsh battle since I’d last seen it.

That said, a rather dismayed-looking Tom Cotter took delivery of said Camaro and toted it up to Charlotte, N.C., to begin working on it.

Our plan is to go through the mechanics of the car, find some take-off track tires and see what happens. We plan to enter the Kershaw, S.C., event held the last weekend in July.
