Sure beats mowing the lawn… Sep 8, 2007
Some of the GRM gang got to meet up with some local Miata owners today for a little get-together and dyno time. Dan Young, one of the cool kids over at ClubRoadster.net, set it all up by posting on the message boards (it even made our GRM forums) and making the arrangements with our hosts. We started out in the parking lot of R.I.D.E. of Daytona, where we all poked around each others’ cars, shook hands, and shot the breeze. It was well attended for a Saturday morning get-together with about 10 Miatae and a few OTM’s (that’s “Other Than Miata”) thrown in for flavor.
After hanging out in the Florida sun for an hour or so, we caravaned our way over to Projekt 7 tuning for a little dyno time. There was an eclectic buffet of Miata present, from rock-stock to a particularly spicy LS1-powered example. The crew at Projekt 7 did a good job of keeping things moving, and the watchful eye of the wideband O2 sensor helped prevent a couple of folks from making holey-piston paperweights.
Highlights included the extremely purposeful LS1 car from the guys at Racing Concepts in Jacksonville. Even in an early state of tune, it made more horsepower than any two of the other Miatas present combined. Another surprise came from a sleeper Dodge Daytona that spun the rollers to the tune of 210hp/275ft-lbs of torque. Although a lot of the participants were hoping for higher numbers, the hot and sticky conditions led to some more conservative results.
Clubroadster.net’s founder Tim Allen also made an appearance to hand out T-shirts and stickers. If you’ve got a miata, you’ll definitely want to check his site out. Think of it as a hipper, more performance focused alternative to the ubiquitous miata.net.
