Safer brake caliper rebuilds

Reader Steve Neal sent this one in, suggesting a better, safer way to get pistons out of brake calipers than using compressed air:

I recommend most strongly that you fabricate an adapter that will connect the caliper (master cylinder, wheel cylinder) with a hand operated, lever type grease gun. All it takes is a brake line nut of the proper size and thread. a length of brake line and a brake line to an 1/8th inch male pipe thread fitting. After making up the adapter, screw the adapter in to the caliper, remove the pipe from the grease gun, attach the adapter to the gun and pump away. You should open the bleeder screw until grease appears so you will not be compressing air.

With this system you have total control of the force that you are applying as the grease is not anywhere as compressible as air. Try it, you’ll never go back.
